Air abrasion is a drill-free, minimally invasive dental technique used to treat small to moderate cavities and prepare teeth for procedures like sealants or bonding. Instead of using a traditional rotating dental drill, the method utilizes a specialized handpiece that directs a precise, high-speed stream of compressed air and fine abrasive particles, typically aluminum oxide, against the tooth surface.
This process works by gently eroding decayed tissue without creating the heat, vibration, or loud noise associated with standard drilling. Because the particle stream is highly targeted, it allows the dentist to remove only the decayed portions of the tooth while preserving as much surrounding healthy enamel as possible.
